DR Congo - January 2018
In support of their club we are riding the forgotten Tour Democratic Republic of Congo route, an 800km ride through terrain broken sharply by conflict, rivers, and a lack of roads.
In a place where poverty and violence grip many communities young men are drawn into lifestyles even they know are dangerous. They have nothing else. No choice. The Goma Cycling Friends Club is a grassroots effort to give young men an opportunity to wake up everyday excited about something beyond fighting, literally, for survival.
We are going to the DR Congo to ride with Charles and his club members but before we go we are raising money to get them all new bikes and kit. We are also raising money to ensure they have funds set aside for travel to nearby African countries where cycling is a more evolved sport so they can participate in cycling events and take prize money home to their families.
We believe in the power of the bicycle and we are proud to see it as a real tool empowering young men in positive ways.

“Young men here are always under pressure to join armed groups so the idea was to stop them. Goma is a very complicated place...”
